Preparing to Sell

Exit Planning for Salon and Spa Owners: When Should You Start?

Business owner planning her exit strategy with a notebook at her desk

Most owners start thinking seriously about selling when they’re tired, when life changes, or when an opportunity appears. By then, there’s often little time left to fix the things that hold value back. That’s why the most successful sales usually begin with a plan made years earlier.

The ideal timeframe: two to three years

Two to three years gives you time to build a team that runs the business without you, clean up your financials, secure the right lease and grow recurring revenue. Buyers pay more for exactly these things.

Twelve months out: still worth it

If you’re hoping to sell within a year, a focused plan can still make a real difference. Tidying financial records, documenting systems and reviewing your lease are all achievable in that time.

What to focus on first

  • Know your number. A free appraisal tells you where you stand today.
  • Reduce reliance on you. Gradually move clients and responsibilities to your team.
  • Protect your lease. Speak with a broker before renewing or signing anything long-term.
  • Clean financials. Separate personal and business expenses and keep records consistent.
  • Build recurring revenue. Memberships, packages and rebooking programmes are attractive to buyers.

Think about life after the sale

Exit planning isn’t only about the business. What do you want next — rest, a new venture, more time with family? Your answer shapes the timing, the structure and the type of buyer you look for.

If you’d like to talk through your options, I offer exit planning and strategic advice for hair, beauty, medi-spa and wellness owners, starting with a free, confidential appraisal.
