It’s the question almost every owner asks me first: what’s my business worth? The honest answer is that it depends — but not in a vague way. There are clear, practical factors that buyers look at, and once you understand them, you can start to influence them.
A busy salon with a full appointment book isn’t automatically a valuable one. Buyers look past turnover to profit — and specifically to the profit they can expect to make once they own the business. That means your accountant’s net profit figure is adjusted to add back things like your own wage, personal expenses run through the business, and one-off costs.
This is one of the biggest factors in hair, beauty and wellness businesses. If you personally generate a large share of the revenue — because clients book with you, not the salon — a buyer will worry about what happens when you leave. The more your team holds the client relationships, the more transferable (and valuable) your profit becomes.
If you’re thinking of selling in the next few years, the good news is that many of these factors are within your control. Moving clients across to your team, tidying up your financials and getting your lease in order can all add real value — but they take time.
The best time to find out what your business is worth is well before you need to know.
That’s why I offer a free, confidential business appraisal. It gives you a realistic value range and a clear explanation of what’s driving it — with no obligation to sell.
